Gas fireplace inserts

Gas fireplace insert installation in Blue Springs, MO

A sealed direct vent insert turns the wood fireplace that came with your house into a heater you run from the couch. Blue Springs Fireplaces installs them in masonry and prefab fireplaces across eastern Jackson County, $3,800 to $8,500 with the liner kit, in one working day.

What an insert actually is

A gas insert is a complete fireplace in a steel box, built to slide into the opening of an existing fireplace. It has a sealed glass front, a burner with ceramic logs or glass media, a blower, and two flexible pipes that run up your chimney: one brings combustion air in from the top, the other carries exhaust out. Because the room air never touches the fire, nothing goes up the flue except the exhaust, and the cold draft you feel from an open fireplace stops.

The result is 70 to 85 percent of the gas you burn coming back into the room as heat. An open fireplace with gas logs returns a fraction of that. If you want to warm a family room on a January evening without running the furnace for the whole house, the insert is the tool.

Masonry fireplaces and prefab boxes

Blue Springs homes split about evenly. The brick masonry fireplace with a clay tile flue, common in anything built before 1985, takes almost any insert that fits the opening. The inspection is about the chimney: cracked tiles or a crumbling crown get fixed before the liner goes in.

The prefab metal box, also called a zero clearance or builder fireplace, is what most homes from 1985 onward have. It sits in a wood framed chase with a metal chimney pipe. Inserts have to be listed by the manufacturer for that specific prefab model, and the box has to be intact: no rust through, no cracked back wall, refractory panels in place. We read the plate inside the box, check the listing, and tell you whether an insert is allowed or whether the box has reached the end and needs a full replacement.

Gas insert questions

How much does a gas fireplace insert cost installed in Blue Springs?

$3,800 to $8,500 installed, including the insert, the two pipe liner kit up the chimney, the surround panel and labor. The gas run, if gas is not already at the fireplace, is $450 to $1,500 more.

Will a gas insert fit my prefab metal fireplace?

Only inserts listed for your prefab model are allowed, and the box has to be sound. We read the rating plate inside the box and check the panels before quoting. If the box has failed, a full direct vent replacement is the right job instead.

Does a gas insert need a chimney liner?

Yes, always. The insert uses a co-linear kit: one flexible liner for exhaust and one for combustion air, run the full height of the chimney and capped. It is included in the insert price.

How much heat does a gas insert put out?

Residential inserts run from about 20,000 to 40,000 BTU input at 70 to 85 percent efficiency, enough to heat a family room or an open main floor as a zone heater. We size to the room, not the opening.

Does the insert need electricity?

The blower and the electronic ignition on most units need a standard outlet inside or next to the firebox. Many have a battery backup so the fire still lights in a power outage.
